Guide to profiling beds

The ultimate guide to electric profiling adjustable beds

We spend roughly a third of our lifetimes in bed. We all value a good nights sleep, which is why finding the perfect bed is crucial. With our ultimate guide to electric profiling adjustable beds, you’re in safe hands.

What Is An Electric Profiling Adjustable Bed?

Electric profiling beds have a mattress platform that consist of two, three or four sections, which can incline independently to create a variety of sleeping and resting positions for increased comfort. Adjustments to the mattress and bed position are made through a remote control handset that can be used by the patient in the bed, or by a carer/assistant. It’s as simple as the click of a button!
Electric profiling beds help provide the user with comfort while lying in bed, and can also provide upwards and downwards vertical movement, for assistance getting in and out of bed.

How Do Electric Profiling Beds Work?

The base of an electric adjustable profiling bed is sectioned. Adjusting the angles and height of the base sections, allows the mattress to be profiled to sit the user up and prevent them slipping down the bed, to raise the legs of the user, and a whole variety of other positions. The movement of these mattress sections is powered and controlled via a bedside handset – which can be operated by the user, or care staff.

How To Choose The Right Electric Profiling Bed For Me?

The beauty of adjustable beds is that they cater for a wide range of people. We often find that people engage in a never ending battle of arranging pillows at night time, to find a body position where they can lie comfortably. Profiling beds are the solution to this.

Medical Conditions such as back issues, breathing issues, and conditions causing fluid retention.
Elderly People who want to retain independence, but want peace of mind that they’re minimising risks.
Disabled People and people with Mobility Issues which makes getting in and out of bed a struggle.
Breathing Problems and Lung issues often mean that users can’t lie flat on their back. Industrial city. For people with lung diseases or asthma, elevation often makes it easier to breath, as it allows the lungs to expand. This also decreases feelings of anxiousness.
Future Proofing for those with progressive illnesses where mobility is likely to decline over time. A common solution is users opting for hoist accessible beds, which have space to allow the legs of a hoist to go under the bed.
Nerve Problems which can be stimulated by massaging features in some beds.

High–Low Adjustable Height Beds

Adjusting the vertical height of a bed is a clever design feature that helps both users and carers. Although this feature is not available on all profiling beds, an inbuilt high-low mechanism provides a range of height combinations to help find the most comfortable position for treatment and posture support.

Carers benefit greatly from adjustable height beds, so much so that they are a requirement by many Social Services provide home care. The height setting allows the carer to choose the correct height for assisting, transferring or turning the user. Raising the height of the bed enables carers to tend to the user at a height that does not put them at risk of back injury. Lowering the height allows them to help the user transfer in and out of bed.

A variable height bed helps independent users get in and out of bed safely and easily. Whether they are getting out of bed and into a standing position or into a seated position in a chair, the bed can be set at the optimum level that helps the user do this with maximum ease. This feature makes a real difference, increasing the user’s independence through the ability to get in and out of bed without assistance.

What Profiling Bed Mattresses Are Best?

More than just the icing on the cake, choosing the right mattress is key to a comfortable bed. Mattresses for profiling beds are broadly available in;

Memory Foam cushions the body and absorbs any pressure build-ups. Memory foam is great as a top layer of a mattress with some reflex foam underneath for extra support. It’s worth mentioning that memory foam tends to retain a lot of body heat, which means you can get hotter quicker when laid on it.
Luxury Pocket Sprung mattresses contain a large number of pocket springs which respond and contour to your body shape, offering maximum support and comfort.
A mixture of both memory foam and pocket spring, depending on your preference.

When buying a profiling bed, a mattress is usually included in the cost of bed. The main element is to ensure that the dimensions of your mattress matches the size of the profiling bed. 6’6” is the standard length.

Single And Double Profiling Beds

As well as single profile beds, double/dual profiling beds allow couples to remain sleeping together. Double adjustable beds have independent remote controls for each side of the bed, meaning that one or both side can be adjusted at any one time. This allows normality of sleeping arrangements, rather than requiring separation into 2 different beds, which can cause unnecessary stress to couples who have slept in the same bed for a long period of time.

What Types of Electric Profiling Beds Are There?

At Sync Living, we categorise profiling beds into two types;

Comfort Profiling Bed

The mattress position on these beds can be adjusted to a range of sitting and lying positions, for maximum comfort. They are controlled using an electric remote control by the user. However, these beds don’t offer vertical movement that moves the whole bed up and down.
